Action Chance to act. The dealer will say "Your action, sir," if a player doesn't realize that it's his turn.

Ante The tiny portion of a bet put down by each player to build the pot at the beginning of each poker hand.

Burn The term that describes the process of issuing the top card from the deck, face down. This is performed between each betting round before handing out the next community card(s). This acts as a security against players recognizing or glimpsing the next card to be used on the board.

Complete Hand A hand that's defined by all five cards - a flush, straight, full house, four of a kind or a straight flush.

House The establishment that runs the game.

Inside Straight A hand containing four cards required to complete a straight except the one in the middle.

Kicker The unpaired card used to determine the better of two near-equivalent hands.

Muck The pile of cards either burned or folded in front of the dealer.

Open-ended straight A hand containing four consecutive cards that need one more at either hand to complete a straight.

Pocket Your cards that only you can see.

Protect The act of keeping your hand by placing a chip on them so that it's not fouled by a discarded hand or accidentally mucked by the dealer.

Quads Four of a kind.

Rank The numerical value assigned to a card (instead of the suit)

Tell Clue or hint that a player unknowingly reveals about their hand

Toke Small amount of money given by the winner of the pot to the dealer. Tokes often resemble the amount of a dealer's income.
